Monday (05/09)

A trip to Tresco proved to be a real Waderfest: a Baird’s Sandpiper & 2 Pectoral Sandpipers (photo) were showing from the Swarovski hide and across the 2 pools other birds seen 6 Ruff, 5 Little Stint (photo), 1 Knot, 7 Curlew Sandpiper, 1 Wood Sandpiper, 12 Green Sandpiper, 2 Common Sandpiper, 18 Dunlin, 39 Black-tailed Godwit, 12 Greenshank, 13 Redshank, 1 Whimbrel, 7 Snipe and 3Oystercatcher, 16 species in all, an unprecedented number by Scilly Standards. Also on the Great Pool were about 50 alba Wagtail,15 flava Wagtail and a Spotted Crake.

Red-backed Shrike – The juvenile was still in field by the Carn Friars Farm Track.

Hobby – 1 flew over the southeast end of the Great Pool, Tresco.

Whimbrel – 1 on Porthloo Beach.

Little Egret – 1 on Porthloo Beach.

Kingfisher – 1 on Old Town Quay.

Tuesday (06/09(

The numbers and variety of waders on the Tresco pools had fallen since Monday but their were still a juvenile Baird’s Sandpiper & a juvenile Pectoral Sandpiper showing from the Swarovski Hide on the Great Pool, Tresco. Also on the pools were: 4 Ruff, 1 Curlew Sandpiper, 1 Wood Sandpiper, 4 Green Sandpiper, 2 Common Sandpiper, 8 Dunlin, 15 Black-tailed Godwit, 10 Greenshank, 8 Redshank and 7 Snipe. Also still present on the Great Pool were similar numbers of Wagtails to Monday i.e. about 50 alba and 15 flava.

Spotted Crake – On Tresco,1 was at southeast end of the Great Pool and it or another was seen from the Davis Hunt Hide, definitely another bird was one seen 10 minutes later on the Abbey Pool

Dotterel – 1 east of the Daymark, St. Martin’s

Cory’s Shearwater – 3 flew southwest of Peninnis.

Great Shearwater – 20 were seen on the morning crossing of the Scillonian III west of Wolf Rock (i.e. in Scillonian waters).

Manx shearwater – 450 were seen on the morning crossing of the Scillonian III west of Wolf Rock (i.e. in Scillonian waters).

Sabine’s Gull – A juvenile was seen on the morning crossing of the Scillonian III west of Wolf Rock (i.e. in Scillonian waters).

Arctic Tern – 1 was seen on the morning crossing of the Scillonian III west of Wolf Rock (i.e. in Scillonian waters).

Shoveler –A female and a juvenile were on the Great Pool, Tresco.

Kingfisher – 1 in Porth Hellick Bay.

Pied Flycatcher – 1 in a Garden on Jackson Hill, Hugh town and 1 at Trenoweth.

Wednesday (07/09)

An exceptional 22 species of wader were seen on Tresco ion a 3 hour visit in the evening.

Birds seen today Included:

Citrine Wagtail – A new juvenile/first-winter bird was on the Great Pool, Tresco in front of the Swarovski Hide.

Baird’s Sandpiper – The juvenile was still showing on the Great Poo, Tresco in front of the Swarovski Hide (photo).

Pectoral Sandpiper – The juvenile was still showing on the Great Pool, Tresco in front of the Swarovski Hide.

Dotterel – 1 still near the Daymark, St. Martin’s.

Little Stint – 1 on Great Pool, Tresco.

Curlew Sandpiper – 1 still showing on the Great Poo, Tresco from the Swarovski Hide.

Wood Sandpiper – 2 showing on the Great Poo, Tresco from the David Hunt Hide.

Green Sandpiper – 7 on Great Pool, Tresco.

Common Sandpiper – 1 on Porth Hellick Pool and 2 on the Great Pool, Tresco.

Ruff – 1 on Porth Hellick Beach and 2 on the Great Pool, Tresco.

Whimbrel – 1 at Pentle Bay, Tresco.

Golden Plover – 1 flew over the Great Pool, Tresco.

Grey Plover – 1 at Pentle Bay, Tresco.

Black-tailed Godwit – 9 on Abbey Pool, Tresco.

Bar-tailed Godwit – 2 at Pentle Bay, Tresco.

Spotted Crake – 1 still at the southeast corner of the Great Pool, Tresco.

Water Rail – 8 on Great Pool, Tresco.

Cory’s Shearwater – A “steady passage” heading southwest past Peninnis in less than half an hour in the morning and 78 between 14:00 & 16:30.

Great Shearwater – 15 past Peninnis between 14:00 & 16:30.

Sooty Shearwater – 1 past Peninnis.

Great Skua – 3 past Old town Bay

Arctic Skua – 1 flew across Old town Bay.

Pied Flycatcher – 2 in Old Town Chuchyard and 1 still in a garden on Jackson’s Hill.

Flava Wagtail – 8 on Great Pool, Tresco.

Alba Wagtail – 12+ on Great Pool and 8 on the Abbey Pool, Tresco.
