Wednesday 18th June 2014 IoS Bird Sightings

St. Mary’s – 2 Common Swifts were over Telegraph, a Lesser Redpoll was in Lower Moors and a Sand Martin ( a scarce bird on Scilly in summer) was at Porth Hellick Pool

Tuesday 17th June 2014 IoS Bird Sightings

St. Mary’s – A female/1st-summer male Golden Oriole was seen in the early evening at Porth Hellick Pool, it was flying across the pool and “belly-dipping” in the water. Nearby a Turtle Dove was at Carn Friars. St. Agnes – 2 Turtle Doves. Gugh – 2 Cuckoos.

Monday 16th June 2014 IoS Bird Sightings

St. Agnes – A Lesser Whitethroat. Gugh – A Cuckoo. Annet – 350+ Manx Shearwaters were offshore. Western Rocks – 80+ Puffins At sea – A Blue Fulmar, 20+ European Storm-petrels, 30 Common Dolphins and 2 Blue Sharks were caught, tagged and released

St. Mary’s – A Serin flew over Tremelethen towards Porth Hellick and the Greenland Wheatear was still at Giant’s Castle. St. Agnes – 2 Turtle Doves. Bryher – 2 Whimbrels

Saturday 14th June 2014 IoS Bird Sightings

St. Mary’s – A RUSTIC BUNTING ( thought to be a first-summer female) was trapped and ringed at Porth Hellick. A Serin flew from fields behind Old town towards Salakee, a Greenland Wheatear was at Giant’s Castle and 4 Common Swifts were over the island. Bryher – 2 Common Swifts

Tresco – 2 Hobby, a Tufted Duck and the female Pochard now only had 5 young. St. Martin’s – 4 Sanderlings and 15+ Common Swifts. Bryher – A Greenshank and a Wheatear

St. Mary’s – 2 Cuckoos were at Porth Hellick and a Green Sandpiper flew over Hugh Town at 03:30! Tresco – A Hobby, a Common Buzzard, a Whimbrel, the juvenile Iceland Gull and 29 Common Swifts, a good count for Scilly. St. Martin’s – 5 Common Swifts and a Common Read more…

Wednesday 11th June 2014 IoS Bird Sightings

St. Mary’s – Cuckoos were at Porth Hellick, Mount Todden and Lower Moors. Tresco – A juvenile Iceland Gull and a female Pochard with 6 young (Pochard are only sporadic breeders on Scilly).
