Red-backed Shrike (R.Mawer)

Friday’s birds were:

St. Mary’s – A juvenile Red-backed Shrike was caught and ringed at Porth Hellick Ringing Station and was relocated in the afternoon in fields on Carn Friars Farm. Also a Tree Pipit was seen there. Nearby on Porth Hellick Pool were 2 Pectoral Sandpipers, a Green Sandpiper, a Common Sandpiper, 11 Greenshanks and a Kingfisher. The Pectoral Sandpiper was still on Lower Moors Pool and the Spotted Crake showed again at dusk.

Tresco – 16 Greenshanks, 5 Redshanks, 2 White Wagtails and 2 Spotted Flycatchers.

Bryher – 2 White Wagtails, a Grey Wagtail, a Hooded Crow, a Spotted Flycatcher and a Common Whitethroat.

St. Agnes – A Sabine’s Gull was off Horse Point.

At sea – A Balearic Shearwater, 2 Sooty Shearwaters and a European Storm-petrel were seen from the Scillonian III on the return journey from St. Mary’s to Penzance.

Saturday’s birds were:

St. Mary’s – A Pectoral Sandpiper was still on Porth Hellick Pool and another was on Lower Moors Pool. Also seen at Lower Moors were 4 Common Snipe, a Green Sandpiper, a Common Sandpiper, a Greenshank a Water Rail and a Kingfisher. The Spotted Crake was seen again at dusk. A Grey Wagtail was in Hugh Town, a Whinchat was at Bar Point and a Pied Flycatcher was on Peninnis.

St. Agnes – 2 Pied Flycatchers and a Common Whitethroat.

St. Martin’s – A Great Northern Diver was off Higher Town.
