Wednesday (09/07)

A couple of local birders invited as spotters on a private charter, doing research  on the height that storm-petrels fly, to see how they  would be affected by at sea wind turbines, had a mind blowing, once in a life time trip. 9 miles south of St. Mary’s they saw not 1 but 2 absolute megas for Scilly, plus a good support cast:

****BAROLO SHEARWATER**** – 1 flew past the boat heading towards St. Agnes/Annet. After the 1  past Horse Point, on April 30th, 1974, was found to be m “not proven” on review,  this latest sighting is the first for Scilly

****ORCA**** – 2 were watched for about 30 minutes (photo). These are the first sightings in Scillonian waters since 2002, when 4 were seen south of the islands on May 6th and 2 om May 8th.

Hobby  – 1 over Longstone.

Common Swift – 1 over Longstone.

Crossbill – 3 at Trenoweth.

Wilson’s Storm-petrel  –  12 on the evening pelagic 8 miles south of St, Mary’s and 1 in Scilly waters, seen from the Scillonian III on the morning crossing from Penzance to St. Mary’s.

European Storm-petrel –– 20 on the evening pelagic 8 miles south of St, Mary’s and 5 in Scilly waters, seen from the Scillonian III on the morning crossing from Penzance to St. Mary’s.

Sooty Shearwater – 1 in Scilly waters, seen from the Scillonian III on the morning crossing from Penzance to St. Mary’s.

Green Sandpiper – 1 in Lower Moors and later at Porth Hellick.

Marsh Harrier –  1 over Annet in the evening.

Hobby – 12 over the Garrison,

Short-beaked Common Dolphin –  50 to 60 on the evening pelagic 8 miles south of St, Mary’s

Atlantic Bluefin Tuna –  12 on the evening pelagic 8 miles south of St, Mary’s

Blue Shark –  1 caught, tagged and released on the evening pelagic 8 miles south of St, Mary’s

European Storm-petrel –  80 on a JNCC charter 8 miles south of St. Mary’s.

Golden Plover –  2 on Wingletang Down, St, Agnes and 1 on Shipman Head Down, Bryher.

Short-beaked Common Dolphin – 20 on a JNCC charter 8 miles south of St. Mary’s.

Harbour Porpoise –  4 on a JNCC charter 8 miles south of St. Mary’s.

Atlantic Bluefin Tuna –  12 on a JNCC charter 8 miles south of St. Mary’s.

Cory’s Shearwater –  14 on a  pelagic trip 7 miles southeast of St. Mary’s.

Sabines Gull –  1 on a  pelagic trip 7 miles southeast of St. Mary’s.

Short-beaked Common Dolphin – 12 on a pelagic trip 7 miles southeast of St. Mary’s.

Blue Shark –  3 caught, tagged and released on a  pelagic trip 7 miles southeast of St. Mary’s.

Tuesday (15/07)

Wilson’s Storm Petrel –  18 on a JNCC charter 8 miles northeast of St. Mary’s.

European Storm-petrel –  80 on a JNCC charter 8 miles northeast of St. Mary’s.

Cory’s Shearwater –  14 on a JNCC charter 8 miles northeast of St. Mary’s and 2 flew past Porth Hellick Down between 10:45 and 11:00

Great Shearwater –  2 on a JNCC charter 8 miles northeast of St. Mary’s.

Sabines Gull –  2 on a JNCC charter 8 miles northeast of St. Mary’s.

Mediterranean Gull –  A juvenile off Bar Point.

Cuckoo – 1 at Pelistry.
