Woodchat Shrike – 1 still below the airport on Salakee Down.

Hoopoe – 1 flew from the edge of the airfield to Porth Minnick.

Quail – 1 flew from the eastern edge of the southern runway onto Salakee Down

Cattle Egret – 1 on Simpson’s Field, Tresco.

Pintail – A drake on the Great Pool, Tresco.

Merlin – A male flew over the airfield.

Cetti’s Warbler – 1 singing by the skate park next to the school playing field.

Yellow Wagtail – 2 with cattle at Parting Csrn.

Tuesday (02/05)

Hoopoe – 1 flushed by a tractor from a field on Peninnis Farm. It or another was seen on Porth Hellick Down in the evening.

Osprey – 1 seen over various locations on St. Mary’s and also seen over Samson.

Turtle Dove – 1 in the pines behind the cadet hut on the Garrison was the first of the year.

Pintail – A drake was on Porth Hellick Pool.

Tufted Duck – The drake was still on the Big Pool.

Great Northern Diver – 1 off the Garrison and 3 off Pentle Bay, Tresco.

Golden Plover – 2 in a field on the west side of Peninnis.

Common Sandpiper – 1 on Porth Hellick Beach.

Purple Sandpiper – 3 on Rosevean.

Whimbrel – 6 at Innisidgen and 3 by the water sports centre on St. Agnes.

Raven – 1 flying from Carn Friars to Kittydown

Black Redstart – 1 at Carn Leh, Old Town Bay.

Wednesday (03/05)

Temminck’s Stint – 1 on Bryher Pool, this is a very rare bird on Scilly.

Woodchat Shrike – 1 still below the airport on Salakee Down.

Golden Oriole – A female at Borough Farm, Tresco.

Marsh Harrier – 1 drifted southeast over Porth Hellick Pool and then over the airfield and Kittydown.

Wood Sandpiper – 4 were briefly on Bryher Pool.

Great Northern Diver – 2 off Woolpack Point on the Garrison.

Pink-footed Goose – 1 on St. Martin’s.

Pintail – A drake was on Simpson’s Field, Tresco.

Lapwing – 1 on the Airfield.

Common Sandpiper – 2 on Simpson’s Field, Tresco and 1 on St. Martin’s.

Whimbrel – 2 on St. Martin’s.

Hobby – 1 over Hillside Farm, Bryher.

Common Swift – A small arrival with 4 over Lower Moors, 1 over Mount Todden and 1 over the Airfield.

Cetti’s Warbler – 2 singing in Lower Moors,

Siskin – 1 in the pines at Jac-a-ba, Trenoweth.

Thursday (04/05)

Eurasian Bittern – 1 flew across the reeds at the western end of the Great Pool, Tresco. This is an exceedingly rare bird on Scilly and was only the 9th record since 1950.

Woodchat Shrike – 1 by the cow fields north of Popplestone, Bryher.

Marsh Harrier – 1 over the Great Pool, Tresco, then seen at various locations over St. Mary’s, living up to its name in the afternoon, when it was harrying the coots on their nests at Porth Hellick Pool (photo)

Wood Sandpiper – 2 on Bryher Pool (photo).

Great Northern Diver – 1 off Csrn Near, Tresco., 2 off the Garrison

Grey Plover – 1 Porth Hellick Beach, 2 at Great Par, Bryher and 1 flew over Bryher Pool towards Stinking Porth.

Common Sandpiper – 2on Porth Hellick Pool and 1 still at Carn Leh, Old town Bay.

Jack Snipe – A “possible” on Lower Moors Pool.

Turtle Dove – 3 in a ploughed field at Normandy Corner.

Common Swift – 3 over Lower Moors Pool

Cuckoo – 1 on Bryher between Popplestone Fields and the Campsite.

Common Whitethroat – 1 by Bryher Pool.

Spotted Flycatcher – 1 in the horse paddock opposite Pelistry Stables.

Tree Pipit – 4 in the horse paddock opposite Pelistry Stables and 1 by Bryher Pool.

Yellow Wagtail – 1 in a horse paddock field east of Popplestone Fields resembled the Grey-headed Wagtail, but the fact that it had some white either side of the eye may suggest some sort of hybrid (photo).

Reed Bunting – 1 calling near the hides in Lower Moors.
