Tuesday (16/08)

The evening joint birding/sharking 3 miles southwest of Bishop’s rock, continued the excellent sighting from the birder’s special pelagic trips, sighting included: 8 Wilson’s Storm-petrel, 60 European Storm-petrel, 20 Cory’s Shearwater, 20 Great Shearwater, 2 Sooty Shearwater, 500 Manx Shearwater, 2 Mediterranean Gull, a Yellow-legged Gull, a breaching Minke Whale (photo), an Ocean Sunfish, 2 Blue Shark and a 300 lb+ Porbeagle Shark (photo). The sharks were all caught and had satellite tags attached as part of a project run by Exeter University the tags drop off after 45 days and transmit where the sharks have travelled, sea temperature and depth etc. The Porbeagle was the heaviest shark ever landed on the M.V. Sapphire.

Icterine Warbler – 1 in the pine belt opposite the Star Castle staff accommodation (photo).

Spotted Crake – 1 on Porth Hellick Pool and 1, possibly 2 on the Great Pool, Tresco.

Wryneck – 1 on the Carn Friars Farm buildings.

Sabine’s Gull –1 seen from the Scillonian III on the return crossing from St. Mary’s to Penzance.

Great Shearwater –2 seen from the Scillonian III on the crossing from Penzance to St. Mary’s.

Balearic Shearwater –1 seen from the Scillonian III on the return crossing from St. Mary’s to Penzance.

European Storm-petrel – 1 seen from the Scillonian III on the crossing from Penzance to St. Mary’s and 5 on the return crossing from St. Mary’s to Penzance.

Little Grebe – 1 of this Scilly scarcity on the Great Pool. Tresco.

Shoveler – 1 on the Great Pool. Tresco.

Wood Sandpiper – 3 on Abbey Pool and 2 on the Great Pool, Tresco.

Green Sandpiper –10 on Abbey Pool & 7 on the Great Pool, Tresco and 1 on Porth Hellick Pool. 

Common Sandpiper – 6 on Abbey Pool & 2 on the Great Pool, Tresco and 2 on Porth Hellick Pool.

Black-tailed Godwit – A splendid count of 25 on Tresco, 21 on the Great Pool (photo) & 4 on Abbey and 2 on Porth Hellick Pool.

Yellow-legged Gull – 1 in a field adjacent to the path from Telegraph road to the Golf Course and 3 on Abbey Pool, Tresco.

Hobby – 1 flew over Porth Hellick Pool.

Cuckoo – A juvenile near Giant’s Castle.

Wood Warbler – 1 in the pine belt opposite Bishop’s View on Porthloo Lane.

Spotted Flycatcher – 2 in the pine belt opposite the Star Castle staff accommodation, 1 in the pine belt opposite Bishop’s View on Porthloo Lane and 1 in the trees behind the cadet hut on the Garrison.

Pied Flycatcher – 2 at Parting Carn Junction, 1 in the pine belt opposite Bishop’s View on Porthloo Lane and 1 at Trenoweth.

Wednesday (17/08)

Great Shearwater –2 seen from the Scillonian III on the crossing from St. Mary’s to Penzance. 

Pied Flycatcher – 1 still in the pine belt opposite Bishop’s View on Porthloo Lane and 1 at Veronica Farm, Bryher.

Spotted Flycatcher – 1 still in the pine belt opposite Bishop’s View on Porthloo Lane.

Thursday (18/08)

Another evening pelagic trip came up trumps with: 15 Wilson’s Storm-petrel, 500 European Storm-petrel, 35 Cory’s Shearwater, 235 Great Shearwater, 6 Sooty Shearwater, 100 Manx Shearwater, a first-summer Long-tailed Skua and an Arctic Tern.

Icterine Warbler – 1 in the pine belt opposite the Star Castle staff accommodation.

Spotted Crake – 1 still on Porth Hellick Pool.

Wood Sandpiper –1 on Porth Hellick Pool. 

Green Sandpiper – 4 on Abbey Pool, Tresco and 1 on Porth Hellick Pool. 

Common Sandpiper – 2 on Porth Hellick Pool and 2 on Abbey Pool, Tresco.

Black-tailed Godwit – 8 on Abbey Pool, Tresco and1 on Porth Hellick Pool.

Yellow-legged Gull – 2 on Abbey Pool, Tresco.

Water Rail – 1 on Porth Hellick Pool.

Kingfisher – 1 Porth Hellick Pool.

Cuckoo – A juvenile at Porth Hellick and a juvenile on St. Agnes.

Common Whitethroat – 1 on the track from Porth Hellick to Salakee Farm.

Spotted Flycatcher – 1 in Carn Friars Farm maze orchard and 2 on St. Agnes.

Pied Flycatcher – 1 still at Parting Carn Junction and 1 at Borough Farm, Tresco.

Friday (19/08)

Birds seem on the evening pelagic trip 6 miles south of St. Mary’s included 3 Wilson’s Storm-petrel, 80 European Storm-petrel, 33 Great Shearwater, 9 Sooty Shearwater, 200 Manx Shearwater and 2 Grey Phalarope.

Spotted Crake – 1 still on Porth Hellick Pool and 1 on the Great Pool, Tresco.

Wood Sandpiper –1 on Porth Hellick Pool and 2 on the Great Pool, Tresco.

Green Sandpiper – 8 on Abbey Pool, Tresco. 

Common Sandpiper – 1 on Porth Hellick Pool and 3 on Abbey Pool, Tresco.

Black-tailed Godwit – 12 on Abbey Pool, Tresco.

Spotted Flycatcher – 1 in the Salakee Down pines.

Pied Flycatcher – 1 in the Salakee Down pine
