The bird reported yesterday as an Icterine Warbler was reidentified as a Melodious Warbler after examination of photos, 1 of which is attached. 

Much to the delight of people aboard the MV Sapphire for the third weekend of Birder‘s Special Pelagic trips, the summer plumage adult Laughing Gull was seen again 3 miles southwest of St. Agnes and continued another 5 miles southwest, further sightings included: 15 European Storm-petrel, 4 Cory’s Shearwater, 15 Great Shearwater, 2 Sooty Shearwater, 500 Manx Shearwater, 2 Great Skua, an adult Sabine’s Gull (photo), a Grey Phalarope, 100 Short-billed Common Dolphin, and a Blue Shark.

Spotted Crake – 1 on the Great Pool, Tresco (photo).

Wood Sandpiper – 1 on Porth Hellick Pool.

Common Sandpiper – 1 on Porth Hellick Pool.

Lapwing – 1 South Beach on Tresco.

Knot – 17! South Beach on Tresco.

Water Rail – 3 on the Great Pool, Tresco and 1 on Porth Hellick Pool.

Common Swift – 1 over Porth Hellick Pool.

Pied Flycatcher – 1 on Porth Hellick Loop Trail, 1 in Carn Friars Orchard, 1 by the tennis court on the Garrison and 1 on Tresco.

Sunday (14/08)

On the second daytime trip of the weekend Birder’s Special Pelagic, the summer plumage adult Laughing Gull was seen again, following the MV Sapphire. 1 mile south of St. Mary’s the trip continued 8 miles southwest of St. Agnes and further sightings included: 2 Wilson’s Storm-petrel (photo), 30 European Storm-petrel, 4 Cory’s Shearwater (photo), 60+ Great Shearwater(photo), 18 Sooty Shearwater (photo), 3000 Manx Shearwater, a juvenile Black Tern (photo), 2 Great Skua, a Grey Phalarope, 40 Short-billed Common Dolphin, 2 Blue Shark (photo), 2 Ocean Sunfish and 150 Atlantic Bluefin Tuna (photo), including a massive boil of about 100 fish.

Lesser Yellowlegs – 1 still on the Great Pool, Tresco.

Spotted Crake – 1 on the Great Pool, Tresco.

Balearic Shearwater – 3 seen from the Scillonian III on the return trip from St. Mary’s to Penzance.

Lapwing – 1 on the Great Pool, Tresco.

Wood Sandpiper – 5 on the Great Pool, Tresco and 1 on Porth Hellick Pool.

Green Sandpiper – An amazing count of 23 on Tresco (16 on the Great Pool & 7 on Abbey Pool) and 6 on Porth Hellick Pool

Common Sandpiper – 12 on the Great Pool, 5 on Abbey Pool, Tresco and 2 on Porth Hellick Pool.

Spotted Redshank – 1 on the Great Pool, Tresco.

Black-tailed Godwit – 2 on Abbey Pool, Treco.

Water Rail – 2 on at Porth Hellick Pool.

Kingfisher – 1 at Porth Hellick Pool

Common Swift – 5 over Porth Hellick Pool.

Cetti’s Warbler – 1 at Porth Hellick.

Common Whitethroat – 1 at Porth Hellick.

Melodious/Icterine Warbler – A bird seen briefly by the roadside at Higher Moors was one of these two species.

Spotted Flycatcher – 2 flew over the Garrison and 1 behind the Community Hall on St. Martin’s.

Pied Flycatcher – 1 flew over the Garrison, 1 Normandy House and 1 Well Cover, Tresco.

Tree Pipit – 1 flew over the Garrison.

Monday (15/08)

The final trip of the weekend third Birder’s Special Pelagic 6 miles southwest of St. Agnes again proved to be outstanding with 3 Wilson’s Storm-petrel, 20 European Storm-petrel, 125+ Cory’s Shearwater, 125+ Great Shearwater, 3 Sooty Shearwater, 1 Balearic Shearwater, 1000 Manx Shearwater, 2 Great Skua, a Grey Phalarope, 30 Short-billed Comm Ocean Sunfish n Dolphin, 30 Atlantic Bluefin Tuna and a leaping Ocean Sunfish.

Elsewhere at sea a Great Shearwater and Sooty Shearwater where seen from the Scillonian III on the morning crossing from Penzance to St. Mary’s.

Black-tailed Godwit – 1 on Porth Hellick Pool (photo).

Whimbrel – 10 flew south past Porth Hellick.

Pied Flycatcher – A female at Parting Carn Junction.

Redstart – A juvenile at Parting Carn Junction
