Sunday 6th August 2017 IoS Bird Sightings

St. Mary’s – A Kingfisher was on Porth Hellick Pool.

Bryher – A Dunlin.

St. Martin’s – A Northern Wheatear.

Inter-island waters– 2 Mediterranean Gulls were in Tresco Channel.

At sea – A Cory’s, 34 Sooty, a Balearic and 2 Great Shearwaters were seen from the Scillonian III on the crossing from Penzance to St. Mary’s. On the return crossing A Cory’s, 2 Balearic, 29 Sooty &100+ Great Shearwaters and an Arctic & 2 Great Skuas were seen.

Birders who went the early starting pelagic were rewarded with: a  Wilson’s Storm-petrels, 100+ European Storm-petrels, 15 Great Shearwaters, 35+ Cory’s Shearwaters, 10 Sooty Shearwaters, a Balearic Shearwater, 5 Great Skuas, a Long-tailed Skua and a Grey Phalarope. Also seen were 100+ Short-beaked Common Dolphins and a mother and calf Minke Whales, 2 Blue Sharks were caught, tagged and released
