Tuesday 18th May 2010 IoS Bird Reports

St. Mary’s - A Grasshopper Warbler in Lower Moors and single Spotted Flycatchers at the Carn Gwaval and on the Garrison.

St. Agnes - 2 Dunlin, 7 Sanderling and a Turtle Dove.

Eastern Isles - A singing Cuckoo and an Osprey flew over towards St. Mary’s

Monday 17th May 2010 IoS Bird Reports

St. Mary’s - The Woodchat Shrike was still at Pelistry.

Tresco - A Marsh Harrier, 3 Whimbrel, a Jackdaw, 9 Teal, a Dunlin and a Common Buzzard.

A Basking Shark was seen begtween St. Mary’s ans St. Martin’s

St. Mary’s - The Woodchat Shrike still at Pelistry, a Common Buzzard over Old Town, a Whimbrel at Morning Point and Marsh Harrier and 2 Lapwing at the golf course.

Tresco - A Jackdaw.

Bryher - 2 Greenland Wheatear.

Saturday 15th May 2010 IoS Bird Reports

St. Mary’s - The Woodchat Shrike was still at Pelistry, a Spotted Flycatcher was on the Garrison and 3 Tree Sparrow ( a Scilly rarity) were in a field at Carn Friars farm. Also on the island were 2 Whimbrel & a White Wagtail

St. Agnes - A Marsh Harrier, 3 Dunlin, 2 Whimbrel a Common Sandpiper and a Redshank.

Friday 14th May 2010 IoS Bird Reports

St. Mary’s - The Woodchat Shrike was on Pelistry Beach, a Wood Sandpiper was on a small pool behind the dump. a Lapwing was at Lower Moors and a Marsh Harrier flew over there.

Northern Rocks - A Great Northern Diver, 2 Sanderling, 2 Whimbrel and the first Storm-petrel of the year.

St. Martin’s - 2 Golden Plover, 51 Sanderling and 8 Whimbrel.

Tresco - 2 Dunlin, a Common Buzzard and a Raven.

A Basking Shark was in Porthcressa Bay and then off St. Mary’s quay in the evening.

Thursday 13th May 2010 IoS Bird Reports

St. Mary’s - A Red Kite flew over Holy Vale at 08.20hrs, a Hobby was at Porth Hellick and the Woodchat Shrike was still down Pelistry Lane. A Cuckoo was at Carn Friars and a Little Egret, 4 Dunlin and a Whimbrel were on Porth Hellick Beach.

Tresco - 3 Common Sandpiper, 2 Spotted Flycatcher and a Pintail.

St. Martin’s - A Common Sandpiper, 21 Sanderling, a Sparrowhawk, and a Spotted Flycatcher.

Bryher - A Marsh Harrier, 2 Great Northern Diver offshore, 4 Whimbrel, a Bar-tailed Godwit, a Pintail, a Spotted Flycatcher and 25 Swift.

St. Agnes - A Spotted Flycatcher, a White Wagtail, 5 Whimbrel and a Common Sandpiper.

Western Rocks - 7 Purple Sandpiper.

Wednesday 12th May 2010 IoS Bird Reports

St. Mary’s - 22 Whimbrel & a Lapwing on the golf course, the Woodchat Shrike still along Pelistry Lane, 6 Tufted Ducks on Porth Hellick Beach and a Common Sandpiper & Wood Sandpiper in Lower Moors. A Grey Wagtail was at Sunnyside. A Basking Shark was off Pelistry Bay.

St. Agnes - A Wood Warbler was at St Warna’s Cove, a Garden Warbler, 2 Spotted Flycatcher, 4 Turtle Dove, a White Wagtail, a Pintail, 11 Whimbrel, 3 Sanderling, 16 Dunlin and a fly over Wood Sandpiper, probably the bird seen later on St. Mary’s. A Cuckoo was near Barnaby Lane and a Sedge Warbler was by the Turk’s Head. A Basking Shark was off the north end of the island.

Western Rocks - 30+ Purple Sandpiper and 10+ Common Sandpiper. Also two Harbour Porpoise.

Tresco - A Blue-headed type Wagtail on the Heliport was thought to be a “Channel” Wagtail. Elsewhere on the island were 2 Spotted Flycatcher, 3 Lesser Redpoll, a Turtle Dove and a Common Buzzard.

Tuesday 11th May 2010 IoS Bird Reports

Over the last 2 days there has been a large influx of hirundines, especially swallows, some of which, according to our resident ringer are very underweight. They have been picked up of the road, not injured, just exhausted, there was also a smaller influx of Swifts.

St. Mary’s - A female Marsh Harrier, 6 tufted Duck and a White Wagtail at Porth Hellick Pool,nearby 4 summer plumaged Dunlin on the beach. The Woodchat Shrike was still down Pelistry Lane, also a Whitethroat and a Kestrel. 26 Whimbrel were on the Golf Course, a Golden Plover was on the Airfield, a Spotted Flycatcher was in Holy Vale and another was on Peninnis. 308 Shags were off Watermill Cove and Common Sandpiper and a Little Egret were on the beach there. A Willow Warbler was at Lower Moors,

Bryher - A Merlin.

St. Agnes - 2 Whinchat, 2 White Wagtail and 12 Whimbrel.

St. Martin’s - A Spotted Flycatcher, 4 Whimbrel and 60+ Sanderling.

Monday 10th May 2010 IoS Bird Reports

St. Mary’s - Woodchat shrike still down Pelistry Lane. A Whimbrel, a Cuckoo, a Tree Pipit & a Redwing on Peninnis. A Spotted Flycatcher & 8 Swift Old Town. Great-northern Diver flew south past Pelistry Bay. 8 Wheatear on Pelistry beach and Common Sandpiper. Stock Dove (2) in Holy Vale and Spotted Flycatcher. Teal (drk) on Porth Hellick Pool and 3 Gadwall.

Tresco - A Bar-tailed godwit, 27 Sanderling, 15 Whimbrel, 49 Dunlin, a Hobby and 400 Swallows.

St. Agnes - A Wood Warbler, 3 Lesser Whitethroat, a female Hawfinch, 20 Sedge Warbler, a Redstart, a Turtle dove and a Hobby.

Bryher - 7 Spotted flycatcher, 12+ Whitethroat, 7 Sedge Warbler, a Wood Warbler, a Whinchat, 12 Whimbrel and a drake Pintail.

St. Martin’s - 3 Kestrel, a male Merlin, 6 Bar-tailed Godwit, 6 Dunlin, 6 Purple Sandpiper, a Common Sandpiper, 46 Swift, 2 Whinchat, 4 Spotted Flycatcher and 3 Raven.

Sunday 9th May 2010 IoS Bird Reports

St. Mary’s - Woodchat Shrike down Pelistry Lane, 6 Tufted Duck on Porth Hellick Pool, Spotted Flycatcher Porthloo & Holy Vale, 2 Common Sandpiper near the quay & 1 at Porthloo, a Great northern diver in the Roads and a Whimbrel on Porth Hellick Beach. 18 Dunlin were on the Airfield, 18 were on Porthloo Beach and 8 were on Porth Hellick Beach.

Tresco - 5 Dunlin and a Bar-tailed Godwit.

St. Agnes - Whinchat, 2 Common Redstart, Lesser Whitethroat, Turtle Dove, White Wagtail, Spotted Flycatcher and a Common Sandpiper.
