Monday 31st October 2011 IoS Bird Reports

St. Mary’s – The Northern Waterthrush was at Higgo’s Pool at dawn and spent a couple of hours in the afternoon on the Lower Moors Pool, where it showed well from the ISBG hide. Also in lower Moors were the Wilson’s Snipe, the Dusky Warbler & a Yellow-browed Warbler. Yellow-browed Warblers were also seen at Jac-a-ba feeding station, in the Dump Clump, at Content and by the shooting club on the Garrison. A Jack snipe was on Higgo’s Pool late afternoon and a Scaup was on Porth Hellick Pool. A Whimbrel, a Water Pipit, a Whinchat & 5 Black Redstarts were on Porthloo Beach and another Black Redstart was on Porth Mellon Beach.

Tresco – A White-rumped Sandpiper, a Lesser Yellowlegs, a Pectoral sandpiper and a Spotted Crake.

St. Agnes – The eastern race Lesser Whitethroat was showing well above Periglis Beach, the Olive-backed Pipit was at Porth Killier and the Pallas’s Warbler was at the Parsonage.

Sunday 30th October 2011 IoS Bird Reports

St. Mary’s – The Northern Waterthrush was seen at Higgo’s Pool and from the ISBG hide in Lower Moors. Also in Lower Moors the Wilson’s Snipe re-appeared in front of the ISBG hide after a couple of days absence. Nearby the Dusky Warbler and a Yellow-browed Warbler were in the wood by Shooters’ Pool. A Firecrest was in Carreg Dhu Gardens, a Red-breasted Flycatcher & a Yellow-browed Warbler were in Holy Vale and 3 more Yellow-browed Warblers were by Higgo’s Pool, Porth Hellick Loop and Newman Point on the Garrison.

St. Agnes – An Olive-backed Pipit, a Pallas’s Warbler, a female Scaup and the eastern race Lesser Whitethroat.

Tresco – The Lesser Yellowlegs, the Pectoral Sandpiper and the Spotted Crake were all still present.

Saturday 29th October 2011 IoS Bird Reports

Apart from a Sabine’s Gull seen on the morning crossing of the Scillonian from Penzance to St. Mary’s all other reports were from St. Mary’s.

The Northern Waterthrush showed at Shooters’ Pool and Higgo’s Pool, it has now been present for 43 days, will it winter here?

2 Yellow-browed Warblers were at Newford Duck Pond and another was in Lower Moors, where the Dusky Warbler was still present. A Richard’s Pipit was at Porth Hellick, a Snow Bunting was at Giants’ Castle and a Red-breasted Flycatcher & a late Whinchat were at Higher Moors. 3 Firecrests were in Carreg Dhu Gardens and 2 were at Lower Moors. 2 Black Redstarts were at Porthloo and another was at Little Porth.

The highlights of Fridays log call were:

Lesser Yellowlegs - 1 still on the Great Pool, Tresco

Northern Waterthrush - Showed at dawn and dusk at Higgo’s Pool

Dusky Warbler - 1 still in Lower Moors

Pallas’s Warbler - 1 was trapped and ringed on St. Agnes

Bullfinch - Another Scilly rarity

The highlights of Thursday’s log were:

Red-eyed Vireo - Nearly 6 weeks after the last individual a new bird in a field hedge at the junction of Carn Friars Lane and Salakee Lane

Lesser Yellowlegs – 1 still on the Great Pool, Tresco

Upland Sandpiper – 1 still at Borough Farm, St. Mary’s

Northern Waterthrush – Showed at dawn and dusk at Higgo’s Pool

Dusky Warbler - 1 in Lower Moors

Treecreeper – This Scilly rarity was still in Carreg Dhu Gardens

The highlights of the log on Wednesday night were:

Lesser Yellowlegs - 1 still on the Great Pool, Tresco

Upland Sandpiper - 1 still at Borough Farm, St. Mary’s

Northern Waterthrush - Showed on and off at Higginson’s Pool, Shooters’ Pool and from the IOSBG hide in Lower Moors

Dusky Warbler - 1 in Lower Moors, 1 heard at Carn Friars and a probable near the tennis court on Bryher

Radde’s Warbler - 1 still at Troy town, St. Agnes

Treecreeper - This Scilly rarity was back at Carreg Dhu Gardens

The highlights of Tuesdays log call were:

Lesser Yellowlegs - 1 still on the Great Pool, Tresco

Upland Sandpiper - 1 still at Borough Farm, St. Mary’s

Northern Waterthrush - Showed briefly 3 times, twice at at Shooters’ Pool and once at Higginson’s Pool

Olive-backed Pipit - One on Peninnis for 10 minutes before flying off towards Old Town

Dusky Warbler - 1 in Lower Moors and 1 below Buzza Tower

Radde’s Warbler - 1 At Troy town, St. Agnes

White-rumped Sandpiper - 1 still on Porth Hellick Beach

Treecreeper - This Scilly rarity was seen again at Salakee

Photo of the tanager attached, the highlights from Saturday’s log were:

Scarlet Tanager - The fourth for Scilly and the first since 1982 was found on Sandy Lane, St. Mary’s at about 11:00 before disappearing at 13:50

Treecreeper - This Scilly rarity is still in Carreg Dhu Gardens.

Lesser Yellowlegs - 1 still on the Great Pool, Tresco

Upland Sandpiper - 1 still at Borough Farm, St. Mary’s
