Friday 28th May 2010 IoS Bird Reports

At least 10 Bee-eaters flew from Middle Town towards Lower Town, St. Martin’s at 08:15 and then they were seen around noon at Gimble Porth, Tresco.

Other birds were:

St. Mary’s - Golden Orioles were reported from Porth Hellick, Trenoweth & Lower Moors, and Hobby and Spotted Redshank were at Porth Hellick. There were also 3 Turtle Doves on the island.

Bryher - Greenshank, 3 Whimbrel, a White Wagtail and 3 Wheatear.

St. Martin’s - A Whimbrel.

Thursday 27th May 2010 IoS Bird Reports

St Agnes - BEE-EATER (12) flew over lighthouse this morning. Also NIGHTJAR.

St Mary’s - Hobby over Porth Hellick early morning. Also Spotted Redshank (2; 1 flew north). Honey Buzzard flew over Porth Hellick Loop towards airfield at 05.55hrs.

St Agnes - WHITE-THROATED SPARROW in field below the Parsonage this morning, tho elusive.

St Mary’s - Spotted Redshank still on Porth Hellick Pool at 07.00hrs.

St. Mary’s - Spotted Redshank & a Mediterranean Gull at Porth Hellick Pool, 2 Golden Oriole in Holy Vale & 1 at Carn Friars, 3 Turtle Dove at Carn Gwaval and 3 in Holy Vale.

Bryher - A Spotted Redshank was on the pool and from timing and plumage details it was a different bird to the Porth Hellick individual. Also on the island Greenshank, 9 Turtle Dove and 2 Whitethroat.

St. Agnes -A Bar-tailed Godwit, 2 Dunlin, a Sanderling and 3+ Wheatear.

Tresco - A Hobby.

40 + European Storm-petrel were seen on an evening pelagic trip.

St. Mary’s - A Spotted Redshank. a Greenshank and a Turtle Dove at Porth Hellick Pool.

St. Agnes - A female Red-backed Shrike and a Quail on Wingletang.

Tresco - A Knot and a Hobby.

Bryher - A Greenshank, a Bar-tailed Godwit, a Dunlin, a Pintail, 4 Spotted Flycatcher, 2 Whitethroat and a Golden Oriole.

St. Martin’s - 16 Swift, a Whitethroat and a Golden Oriole.

St. Mary’s - Golden Oriole at Carn Friars & near Star Castle, a Purple Heron in off the sea at Shark’s Pit and a Black Redstart on the Garrison

St. Agnes - A male Red-backed Shrike, a Hoopoe, a Golden Oriole, 12 Turtle Dove, a Whimbrel, a Bar-tailed Godwit, a Dunlin and 23 Sanderling.

Teän - A Whimbrel.

Annet - A Turtle Dove.

Bryher - 2 Little Stint, 5 Whitethroat, 3 Spotted Flycatcher, a Hooded Crow and a probable distant Montagu’s Harrier.

Tresco - 8 Dunlin and 6 Sanderling.

St. Martin’s - Singing male Golden Oriole & Wryneck

Saturday 22nd May 2010 IoS Bird Reports

St. Mary’s - A Bee-eater in Old Town and then on wires between Carn Gwaval School and the incinerator. A Hobby over Porthloo and the Garrison, a Spotted Flycatcher on the golf course, a Yellow Wagtail & 2 Turtle Doves at Carn Friars and another Turtle Dove at Telegraph.

St. Agnes - An immature male Golden Oriole flew over the cricket pitch.

St. Martin’s - 3 Turtle Doves.

St. Mary’s - 2 adult male Red-backed Shrike on Carn Friars Farm a Marsh Harrier at Porth Hellick and single Turtle Dove at Lower Moors & Old Town.

 Gugh- A Bar-tailed Godwit.

 St. Martin’s - A Hobby & 2 Raven.

Thursday 20th May 2010 IoS Bird Reports

St. Mary’s - A Quail at Porth Hellick, a Spotted Flycatcher in Lower Moors, 2 White Wagtails at the quay, 3 Turtle Dove along Sandy Lane and another near Buzza Tower. An immature male Marsh Harrier was seen over both Higher and Lower Moors.

Tresco - A Red-breasted Merganser, a Common Gull, a Pintail, a Jackdaw and a Raven.

St. Agnes -  A Bar-tailed Godwit and a Turtle Dove.

Samson - A Roseate Tern and a female Marsh Harrier.

St. Martin’s - A Raven flew over the cricket pitch in the evening.

Annet - A Spotted Flycatcher.

The first evening pelagic of the year produced a Great Skua, 20 European Storm-petrel, 15 Manx Shearwater and rather unusually for a pelagic trip a female Pied Flycatcher & a Garden Warbler.

Wednesday 19th May 2010 IoS Bird Reports

St. Mary’s - A Hobby over Porth Hellick, 8 Sanderling , a Grasshopper Warbler on Lower Moors Loop, 7 dunlin & a female Common Redstart at Old Town Bay and a Spotted Flycatcher at Shooters’ Pool. 30 Dunlin and a Whimbrel on Porthloo Beach, there were also 2 Whimbrel on Porth Mellon Beach and another on the Garrison.

Tresco - A Marsh Harrier, 15 Dunlin and 3 Sanderling.
