Manday 19th October 2009 IoS Bird Report

St. Mary’s - 2 Whooper Swans, 2 Jack Snipe, a Woodcock, a Little Grebe & a Kingfisher at Porth Hellick, a Woodlark flew over Peninnis and 2 Common Scoter, 10 Sooty Shearwater & 12 Great Skua were seen in a seawatch from there. The Common Rosefinch was still at Carn Gwaval and the Wryneck was still at Porth Minnick. A Bar-tailed Godwit was on Porthloo Beach, this October’s only Turtle Dove was at Pelistry, a Long-eared Owl flew form Old Town Church, 4 Lapwings were at High Lanes, a Jack Snipe was at Shooters’ Pool a Yellow-browed Warbler was in Lower Moors and 5 Common Scoter were in the Roads. Also on the island were 20+ Black Redstarts, 4 Common Redstarts, 2 Ring Ouzels, 8 Firecrests & 9 Mediterranean Gulls.

Tresco - 5 Wigeon, 2 Pintail, 4 Pochard, 2 Little Grebe, a Common Buzzard, a Bar-tailed Godwit,a Yellow-browed Warbler and a Lapland Bunting.

St. Agnes - 2 Bar-tailed Godwit, a black Redstart, a Firecrest and a Rose-coloured Starling.

St. Martin’s - A Golden Plover, 2 Woodcock, 10 Bar-tailed Godwits, 2 Black Redstarts, 2 Ring Ouzels and a Firecrest.

Bryher - A Great Northern Diver and a Brambling.

Samson - 4 Spoonbills and 4 Shelduck.

Grey Heron numbers reports increased significantly with groups of 22 in Tresco Channel, 10 Peninnis and 9 on Hedge Rock.

St. Mary’s - 2 Whooper Swans on Porth Hellick, Pintail at Newford duck Pond, 5 Common Scoters in the Roads, Golden Plover on Porth Hellick Down, 4 Lapwings at Kittydown, 2 Jack Snipe on Shooters’ Pool, Arctic Tern & Wryneck at Porth Minnick, Richard’s Pipit on the airfield, Spotted Flycatcher in Holy Vale, 2 Bramblings at Longstone and Common Rosefinch at Carn Gwaval. Also on the island were 2 Mediterranean Gulls,11 Black Redstarts, 2 Common Redstarts, 2 Yellow-browed Warblers, 6 Ring Ouzels and 11 Firecrests.

Tresco - 11 Wigeon, 2 Pintail, 4 Pochard, 2 Little Grebe, Mediterranean Gull, Wryneck, 2 Black Redstarts, Red-breasted Flycatcher and a Lapland Bunting.

St. Agnes - 2 Whooper Swans.

St. Martin’s - 2 Golden Plover, Woodcock, Yellow-browed Warbler and 4 Firecrests.

Bryher - Golden Plover, 2 Grey Plover (this autumn’s first), Woodcock, 3 Black Redstarts, 2 Yellow-browed Warblers and Rose-coloured Starling.

Samson - 4 Spoonbills and 4 Shelducks.

Saturday 17th October 2009 IoS Bird Reports

St. Mary’s - A COMMON ROSEFINCH in the Dump/Carn Gwaval area, 2 Lapland Buntings on the Golf Course, Wryneck Porth Minnick and 13 Golden Plover on the airfield. The 10 Whooper Swans flew over Longstone at 08:15 and only 2 were left on Porth Hellick Pool later. 5 Common Scoter were in the Roads, 4 Jack Snipe were at Shooters’ Pool, 2 Bar-tailed Godwit and a Spotted Flycatcher were at Porthloo. A Woodcock was on Peninnis, 2 Lesser Redpolls were at Porth Hellick, 2 Lapwing flew over Kittydown and one flew over Longstone. Also on the island were 3 Mediterranean Gulls, 6 Black Redstarts, 4 Common Redstarts, 3 Ring Ouzels, 2 Yellow-browed Warblers and 13 Firecrests.

Tresco - Red-Breasted Flycatcher, Lapland Bunting, 9 Wigeon, 3 Pochard, 2 Pintail, 3 Golden Plover, 2 Black Redstarts and 2 Brambling.

St. Agnes - Rose-coloured Starling, 5 Whooper Swans, Wryneck, Richard’s Pipit, Black Redstart, Ring Ouzel and 4 Firecrests.

St. Martin’s - *RADDE’S WARBLER* , Little Bunting and Yellow-browed Warbler.

St. Mary’s - *RADDE’S WARBLER* at Sandy Lane, *RED-THROATED PIPIT*over Longstone, COMMON ROSEFINCH Porthloo and 10 Whooper Swans, 2 Jack Snipe & Kingfisher at Porth Hellick Pool. 5 Common Scoter in the Roads, a Spotted Flycatcher at Harry’s Walls, 4 Lapwing over Lunnon, a Jack Snipe on Shooters’ Pool, Black-tailed Godwit at Innisidgen, 4 Bar-tailed Godwits at Porthloo and a Woodcock on the Garrison. Common Redstarts at Borough Farm & Porthloo, Wryneck on the coastal path near the airfield turning circle. Adult Mediterranean Gull past Peninnis and a second-winter in the Roads. Also on the island were 13 Firecrests, 3 Yellow-browed Warblers 6 Black Redstarts and 5 Ring Ouzels.

Tresco - COMMON ROSEFINCH, 9 Wigeon, 2 Pintail, 3 Pochard, 2 Little Grebe, second-winter Mediterranean Gull, Common Redstart, Lapland Bunting and Brambling.

St. Martin’s - *RADDE’S WARBLER* at Little Arthur Farm, Little Bunting, Firecrest, Yellow-browed Warbler, Common Redstart, Mediterranean Gull and 8 Bar-tailed Godwits.

Bryher - Ring-billed Gull, Rose-coloured Starling, Yellow-browed Warbler, Ring Ouzel, Golden Plover and Great Crested Grebe off Spencer’s Ledge.

Samson - 4 Spoonbills, Black Redstart and 2 Shelduck.

Gugh - Ring Ouzel.

Western Rocks - Purple Sandpiper.

St. Mary’s - *RED-THROATED PIPIT* at Bant’s Carn and *RADDE’S WARBLER* at Carreg Dhu, 10 Whooper Swans, a Kingfisher & a Jack Snipe at Porth Hellick, 3 Bar-tailed Godwits at Porthloo Beach 5 Common Scoter in the Roads, a Wryneck near the Airfield turning circle, a second-winter Mediterranean Gull off the quay and a Common Rosefinch on Peninnis. Also on the island were 5 Lapwing, 13 Black Redstarts, 4 Common Redstarts, 3 Ring Ouzels, 6 Mistle Thrushes, 3 Yellow-browed Warblers and 11 Firecrests.

Tresco - 8 Wigeon, 2 Pintail, 2 Little Grebe, Common Buzzard, an adult Mediterranean Gull, Black Redstart, Wryneck, Ring Ouzel, Yellow-browed Warbler and a Lapland Bunting.

St. Agnes - 5 Whooper Swans, Little Grebe, Curlew Sandpiper, 4 Bar-tailed Godwits, Yellow-browed Warbler, Firecrest, Rose-coloured Starling,a Red-breasted, a Spotted and 2 Pied Flycatchers.

St. Martin’s - *RADDE’S WARBLER*, LITTLE BUNTING, Yellow-browed Warbler, Firecrest, Golden Plover, Jack Snipe, 7 Bar-tailed Godwits, 2 Common Redstarts, 4 Ring Ouzel, 2 Mistle Thrushes and this autumn’s first Brambling.

Bryher - Rose-coloured Starling.

Samson - 4 Spoonbills on Stone Island.

Bishop Rock - 2 Purple Sandpipers and a Black Redstart.

At sea - 3 Sooty Shearwaters, 5 Great Skuas, a Little Gull, a Common Gull and 2 Puffins.

There as been a reasonable influx of Redwing with a few Fieldfare and Siskin on the islands.

St. Mary’s - 10 Whooper Swans & a Kingfisher at Porth Hellick Pool, 5 Common Scoter & a Sandwich Tern in the Roads, A Rose-coloured Starling at Porth Minnick moving to Green Lane, Great Northern Diver off Peninnis, 2 Knot & 4 Bar-tailed Godwit on Porthloo Beach, Mistle Thrush on the Garrison, Common Redstart at Star Castle, Wryneck on the Airfield, Reed Bunting in Lower Moors, juvenile Arctic Tern in Old Town Bay and a Hen Harrier over St. Mary’s which then flew to St. Martin’s. Also on the island were 3 Yellow-browed Warblers, 12 Firecrests, 2 Lapwing, a Golden Plover, 6 black Redstarts and 6 Ring Ouzels.

Tresco - 8 Wigeon, 2 Pintail, 3 Little Grebe, Common Buzzard, a first winter Mediterranean Gull, 2 Black Redstarts, 3 Common Redstart, Ring Ouzel, Yellow-browed Warbler, 9 Lesser Redpoll and a Lapland Bunting.

St. Agnes - 5 Whooper Swans, Black Redstart, Common Redstart, 2 Ring Ouzel, Mistle Thrush, Melodious Warbler, 2 Yellow-browed Warblers, Firecrest & Rose-coloured Starling.

St. Martin’s - *RADDE’S WARBLER* , LITTLE BUNTING, 3 Yellow-browed Warblers and Firecrest.

Bryher - 2 Lapwings, Richard’s Pipit, 2 Black Redstarts, Reed Bunting, Ring Ouzel, Mistle Thrush and Yellow-browed Warbler.

Tuesday 13th October 2009 IoS Bird Reports

St. Mary’s - Wryneck near Giants’ Castle, 2 Black Redstarts on Peninnis Head & 1 at Peninnis Far. Yellow-browed Warblers at Newford Duck Pond, Lower Broome & Trenoweth and a Lesser Whitethroat was on the western side of Peninnis. A juvenile Arctic Tern was in Old Town Bay, a Sandwich Tern was in the Roads, 10 Whooper Swans were on Porth Hellick Pool, 3 Bar-tailed Godwits were on Porthloo Beach, a Jack Snipe was behind the Dump and Ring Ouzels were at Carn Vean & Bar Point. A Lapwing flew over Porth Hellick, a Balearic Shearwater flew past Peninnis, 5 Common Scoter were in the Roads and Mistle Thrush & Fieldfare were on the Garrison. A Common Redstart was at Normandy and Spotted Flycatchers were at Carn Friars & Porth Hellick Down, Also on the island were at least 8 Firecrests and a Hen Harrier which then flew over St. Martin’s.

Tresco - 7 Wigeon, 3 Pintail, a Little Grebe, 2 Golden Plovers, a second-winter Mediterranean Gull,a Common Redstart, a Yellow-browed Warbler and a Snow Bunting.

St. Agnes - 5 Whooper Swans, 5 Bar-tailed Godwits, a Wryneck, a Black Redstart, 3 Yellow-browed Warblers and a Rose-coloured Starling.

St. Martin’s - 3 Sooty shearwaters, 2 Sandwich Terns & 4 Puffins flew past. On land there were 6 Golden Plovers, 9 Bar-tailed Godwits, a LITTLE BUNTING, a Firecrest, 2 Yellow-browed Warblers, a Common Redstart, a Black Redstart, a Fieldfare and a Lesser Whitethroat.

Bryher - RICHARD’S PIPIT, Tree Pipit, Ring Ouzel, Black redstart, Fieldfare and Lesser Whitethroat.

Eastern Isles - Summer plumage Great Northern Diver

At sea - From a shark fishing trip - 8 Sooty shearwaters, 15+ Great Skuas, Storm Petrel and Arctic Skua. Also seen on this trip were a Basking Shark and a Blue Shark, the latter been caught, tagged and released.

Monday 12th October 2009 IoS Bird Reports

There was a small influx of Redwings and Siskins on the islands.

St Mary’s - *RED-THROATED PIPIT*flew over Peninnis Head towards airfield at 07.40hrs. Previously seen on Peninnis Head near lighthouse. Yellow-browed Warblers at Porthloo Lane, Old Town churchyard and Lower Moors this morning. Rose-coloured Starling in fields above Porth Minnack, a Red-breasted Flycatcher at Lunnon again briefly and a Wryneck near Giants’ Castle. The 10 Whooper Swans were still on Porth Hellick Pool along with a Kingfisher, 4 Common Scoters were in the Roads, a Black Redstart at Shark’s Pit, 5 Golden Plovers on the airfield and another over the Garrison and a Jack Snipe was on Porth Hellick Down. Common Redstarts were at Higher Moors, Porthloo & Innisidgen, a Great Skua flew over the Garrison, 3 Mediterranean Gulls were off Bar Point and 5 Bar-tailed Godwits were on Porthloo Beach. Also on the island were 6 Yellow-browed Warblers and 13 Firecrests.

Tresco - 6 Wigeon & 2 Little Grebes on the Great Pool and 3 Whooper Swans flew over.

St. Agnes - 5 Whooper Swans, a Bar-tailed Godwit, a Wryneck, 4 Ring Ouzel, a Rose-coloured Starling and a Yellow-browed Warbler.

St. Martin’s - Great Northern diver & 2 Great Skuas offshore, a flyover ringtail Hen Harrier, 6 Fieldfares, a Golden Plover, a Bar-tailed Godwit, a Yellow-browed Warbler, a *RED-THROATED PIPIT* and a Lapland Bunting.

Bryher - A Wryneck, a Red-breasted Flycatcher and a report of a Ring-billed Gull.

At sea - A Little Gull, 2 Arctic Skuas, 5 Great Skuas and 3 Puffins on a pelagic.

Sunday 11th October 2009 IoS Bird Reports

St Mary’s - LITTLE BUNTING still this afternoon at top end of Porthloo Lane. Wryneck on coastal path between Giants Castle and Porth Hellick. Yellow-browed Warbler at Dump Clump this afternoon and Firecrest (2). Whooper Swan (10) still on Porth Hellick Pool. Yellow-legged Gull flew east past The Garrison.

Tresco - Yellow-browed Warbler near church at Old Grimsby. Snow Bunting still at Kettle Point and Med Gull in Pentle Bay. No sign of Long-billed Dowitcher today.

St Martin’s - *RED-THROATED PIPIT* in fields above Little Arthur Farm, tho mobile. Little Stint still on St Martin’s Flats and Med Gull. Also Firecrest, Whimbrel and Great-northern Diver today.

St Agnes - ROSE-COLOURED STARLING still on Castella Down this afternoon. Wryneck in field on right just west of Gugh Bar. Whooper Swan (5) on Big Pool.
