Wildlife Tours

Discover the beautiful Isles of Scilly with resident ornithologist and naturalist Will Wagstaff. Watch the passage of migrant birds; learn about the interesting local history and beautiful flora and fauna as you walk the coasts and trails.

Will visits each of the inhabited islands weather and tides permitting. The walking is at a relaxed pace along the Will Wagstaffcoastal paths and inland trails, stopping at the local pubs and cafes for lunch and afternoon tea. (The cost of this is not included.) The itinerary varies from week to week but tours usually leave from either St. Mary’s quay or the Porthcressa Bank every week day morning at 9:45, between March and October. For a full day guided walk the charge is just £10.00. For Off-Island tours the boat fare needs to be added (currently £7.60). Half-day tours are available at £5.00 per head. (Please call for group rates.) The St. Mary’s Boatmen’s Association is used for all the Off Island Excursions; boat tickets are available from Will on the quay on the day of the tour.

There is no need to book in advance unless the reservation is for parties of 8 or more. Just meet on the quay to the left of the Association ticket kiosk where you will see the Island Wildlife Tours board advertising details of that day’s tour. For daily itinerary see the board on the quay, Saturday’s Slideshow or telephone 01720 422212.

Sounds really good; we are thinking of visiting the first week of April; is there likely to be much happening with birds or is it a bit early?

Hi Steve, first week in April can be great. Early migrants and summer visitors should be well on there way back and theres a chance of a few winter visitors lingering. Early scarcities have in the past included Garganey, Night Heron, Osprey, Ring Ouzel and Hoopoe and summer migrants should be back to, like, Willow Warblers, Wheatear, Chiffchaff etc. You never know what to expect either, rarities at this time of year can also turn up, the Great Blue Heron in 2015 was an early April surprise!

Thanks for that, we look forward to seeing you in April

    Kind regards

We’re on St Marys for the week 29 April to 5 May. Will you be leading tours at that time around the islands?

    Hi,
Planning to come over for the Easter weekend. Are there guided tours during those days, as well as boat excursions? Thanks!
