Friday 12th to Thursday 18th August 2016 IoS Bird Sightings

Friday’s birds were:

St. Mary’s – 4 Dunlins & a Green Sandpiper were at Porth Hellick Pool and 6 Sandwich Terns were at Bar Point.

Bryher – 28 Ringed Plover and 3 Willow Warblers.

Inter-island waters – A Mediterranean Gull, 10 Common and 6 Sandwich Terns were in Tresco Channel.

At sea – A Wilson’s Storm-petrel, 40+ European Storm-petrels, a Sooty Shearwater, 3 Risso’s Dolphins, 3 Ocean Sunfish and 7 Blue Sharkswere seen on an evening pelagic trip.

Saturday’s birds were:

St. Mary’s – A Mediterranean Gull was off the golf course.

St. Martin’s – A Hooded Crow.

At sea – The daytime pelagic trip produced a Great, a Balearic & 2 Sooty Shearwaters, 80+ European Storm-petrels, a Sabine’s Gull, an Arctic & 4 Great Skuas, a Minke Whale, 3 Risso’s & 30 Common Dolphins, 10 Harbour Porpoise, 2 Blue Sharks and 5 Ocean Sunfish.

Sunday’s birds were:

St. Mary’s – 8 Greenshanks were at Porth Hellick and 2 Common Swifts were over the island.

St. Agnes – 12 Common Swifts and a Wheatear.

Bryher – A Dunlin.

Tresco – 20+ Sanderlings, 4 Dunlins, 3 Whimbrels and a Turnstone.

Inter-island waters – 2 Mediterranean Gulls were in Tresco Channel.

At sea – A quiet daytime pelagic trip ( to calm and sunny!) produced 2 Sooty Shearwaters, 20+ European Storm-petrels, 100+ Common Dolphins, 3 Ocean Sunfish and 2 Blue Sharks.

Monday’s birds were:

St. Mary’s – A Pied Flycatcher was in the Garrison Pines. 12 Greenshanks, 4 Dunlins, 2 Green Sandpipers and a Common Snipe were at Porth Hellick Pool.

St. Agnes – 2 Wood Sandpipers were on the Big Pool.

Tresco –  9 Greenshanks, a Dunlin, a Common & 9 Green Sandpipers, 3 Teal and 3 Common Swifts.

At sea – The short-range pelagic trip in the evening produced a Long-tailed & 2 Great Skuas, a Sooty Shearwater, 40+ European Storm-petrels and 2 Blue Sharks.

Tuesday’s birds were:

St. Mary’s – An Icterine Warbler was on the Garrison. A Wood & 3 Green Sandpipers, a Whimbrel, a Common Snipe, 12 Greenshanks, 4 Dunlins and 4 Common Swifts were at Porth Hellick. A Kingfisher was on Lower Moors Pool.

St. Agnes – A Wood Sandpiper, a Yellow-legged Gull, a Pied Flycatcher, a Wheatear and 4 Common Swifts.

At sea – The short-range pelagic trip in the evening produced a Blue Fulmar and 2 Sooty Shearwater.

Wednesday’s birds were:

St. Mary’s – The Icterine Warbler 5 Common Swifts & 10 Pied Flycatchers were on the Garrison and the Wood Sandpiper was still at Porth Hellick Pool.

Thursday’s birds were:

St. Mary’s – 2 Wood, 4 Green & 6 Common Sandpipers, a Common Snipe, 4 Dunlins and 8 Greenshanks were at Porth Hellick Pool, nearby a Pied Flycatcher was in Salakee Down pines. A Kingfisher and a Water Rail were on Lower Moors Pool.

St. Agnes – A Melodious Warbler was in the pines by the cricket pitch and the first Wryneck of the autumn was in the Parsonage garden.

At sea – 2 Cory’s, 1 Great & 2 Sooty Shearwaters, 5 Blue Sharks, 2 Ocean Sunfish and 20 Common Dolphins were seen on the short-range pelagic trip.

Birders on the Scillonian III morning crossing from Penzance to St. Mary’s saw a Great, 3 Cory’s, a Sooty & 3 Balearic Shearwaters and 40+ European Storm-petrels. The return trip in the afternoon/early evening produced 2 Great Shearwaters, 12+ European Storm-petrels and a Minke Whale.
