A selection from Thursday’s log:
**CASPIAN TERN** – A bird flew in over the Garrison and then over Lower Moors before settling on Porth Hellick Pool. It made occasional fishing forays to the nearby pool and then returned to the beach. This was the first record for Scilly and a very welcome addition to the local birders Scilly lists.
Sora Rail – Still showing from the Swarovski hide on Tresco.
Cattle Egret – 2 Tresco and then Riding Stables area.
Richard’s Pipit – 1 Bryher.
Melodious Warbler – 1 was in gardens below Garrison House on Sallyport.
Red-breasted Flycatcher – 1 Four Lanes End and 1 Tresco.
Common Rosefinch – 1 on Bryher and 1 on the Garrison
Wryneck – 1 Borough Farm, 1 Porthcressa and 1 on the Garrison.
Merlin – 1 on Bryher.
Red-backed Shrike – 1 on the Garrison.
Firecrest – 1 Carreg Dhu Gardens, 1 Bryher, 1 St. Martin’s and 2 on Tresco..
Yellow-browed Warbler – 22 on St. Mary’s and 5 on Tresco..
Lapland Bunting – 3 on Bryher and 1 on the Airfield.
Black-necked Grebe – 1 Porthcressa Bay.
Turtle Dove – 1 around Hugh Town Museum.
Pale-bellied Brent Geese – 1 Pentle Bay, Tresco.
Wigeon – 13 Great Pool. Tresco and 1 Porth Hellick Pool.
Common Scoter – 1 Porthcressa and 3 1 Bar Point.
Balearic Shearwater – 2 off Porth Hellick Down.
Hobby – 1 Kittydown and 1 over the Great Pool, Tresco.
Woodcock – 1 Bryher.
Jack Snipe – 11 on Porth Hellick Pool, 11 Lower Moors and 1 Newford Duck Pond..
Lapwing – 2 Trewince.
Whimbrel – 1 toll’s Island and 1 Garrison.
Ruff – 2 on St. Mary’s Airfield.
Black-tailed Godwit – 1 Porth Hellick Pool and 1 Lower Moors.
Curlew Sandpiper – 1 on Porthloo Beach.
Mediterranean Gull – 11 in Tresco Channel and 5 at Pentle Bay.
Common Whitethroat – 1 on Bryher.
Ring Ouzel – 1 on Bryher.
Fieldfare – The first of the autumn was 1 Pungies Lane.
Mistle Thrush – 1 Tresco.
Redwing– 3 on the St. Mary’s and 1 on Bryher.
Spotted Flycatcher – 6 on the Garrison, 1 on Tresco and 1 on Bryher.
Pied Flycatcher – 2 on St. Mary’s and 2 on Tresco.
Black Redstart – 1 Porthcressa, 1 Bryher and 2 St. Martin’s.
Common Redstart – 5 on St. Mary’s, 1 on St. Martin’s and 1 on Tresco.
Whinchat – 11 on St. Mary’s and 15 on Bryher.
Tree Pipit – 1 Garrison.
Brambling – 1 Garrison.
