Sunday 3rd and Monday 4th September 2017 IoS Bird Sightings

Sunday’s birds were:

St. Mary’s – A Pectoral Sandpiper was still on Porth Hellick Pool. The other Pectoral Sandpiper was still on Lower Moors Pool, where there also 2 Common Snipe, a Black-tailed Godwit and a Greenshank. A Wryneck was on the Garrison.

Bryher – A Yellow Wagtail and the first Lapland Bunting of the autumn.

Teän – 4 Dunlins and a Mediterranean Gull.

At sea – 23 European Storm-petrels, a Sooty, 19 Great and 15 Balearic Shearwaters were seen from the Scillonian III on the return crossing from St. Mary’s to Penzance.

Monday’s birds were:

St. Mary’s – The Pectoral Sandpiper and Dunlin were on Porth Hellick Pool. The Pectoral Sandpiper, or another was briefly on Porth Mellon Beach at 08:00, where there were also 8 Dunlins. A Green Sandpiper, a Common Snipe, a Greenshank and a Kingfisher were on Lower Moors Pool. A Whinchat was on Peninnis.

Tresco – A Pintail, a Common Sandpiper, 2 Whinchats, 3 Spotted Flycatchers and a Pied Flycatcher.

At sea – A Sooty & 2 Balearic Shearwaters were seen from the Scillonian III on the crossing from Penzance to St. Mary’s in the morning and a Great, a Balearic and 5 Sooty Shearwaters were seen on the return journey in the late afternoon/ early evening.

The short-range pelagics continue to deliver the birds with 4 more Wilson’s Storm-petrels, (season’s current total 114), 15 European Storm-petrels, 3 Cory’s Shearwaters, 37 Great Shearwaters, 2 Sooty Shearwaters, 3 Great Skuas and a Black Tern. Also about 30 Common Dolphins were seen and 2 Blue Sharks were caught, tagged and released.
