Sundays birds were:
St. Mary’s – 2 Pectoral Sandpipers, 4 Green Sandpipers, a Common Sandpiper,
2 Dunlins, 12 Ringed Plovers, a Water Rail and a Kingfisher were at Porth
Hellick, where an Osprey Flew over and the adult Night Heron showed again in
the evening. The Night Heron flew over Church Road towards Hugh Town 21:00. A Pectoral Sandpiper was on Lower Moors Pool late afternoon.
At sea – Despite unpromising conditions, (flat calm and no wind) the daytime
Birders’ Special pelagic trip still produced the goods. The highlights were:
2 Wilson’s Storm-petrels, 15 European Storm-petrels, 7 Cory’s, a Great, 2
Balearic & 4 Sooty Shearwaters, 3 Great Skuas and 2 Arctic Skuas. The marine
life in the water was also impressive with 4 species of Jellyfish, a
Leatherback Turtle, 20 Short-beaked Common Dolphins, a Porbeagle Shark, 7
Blue Sharks and 3 Ocean Sunfish.
Monday’s birds were:
St. Mary’s – A Pectoral Sandpiper, a Green Sandpiper, a Greenshank, a Common Snipe and a Kingfisher were on Lower Moors Pool. The other Pectoral Sandpiper and a Water Rail were still at Porth Hellick.
Tresco – 19 Greenshanks, 4 Redshanks, a Water Rail, 2 Tree Pipits, a Yellow Wagtail, 2 Pied Flycatchers and 2 Spotted Flycatchers.
Samson – A Whimbrel and 5 White Wagtails.
St. Agnes – A White Wagtail.
Annet – A White Wagtail.
At sea – A Wilson’s Storm-petrel, a Great, a Cory’s, a Balearic and 2 Sooty Shearwaters were seen from the Scillonian III ( within the Scilly recording area) on the morning crossing from Penzance to St. Mary’s.
On a quiet evening short-range pelagic the highlights were: 40+ European Storm-petrels, a Great Shearwater, 3 Sooty Shearwaters, an adult Sabine’s Gull, 3 Great Skuas, an Arctic Tern and 30 Short-beaked Common Dolphins.
